Prosodic patterning in distal speech context: Effects of list intonation and f0 downtrend on perception of proximal prosodic structure

چکیده
Prosodic structure is often perceived as exhibiting regularities in the patterning of tone sequences or stressed syllables. Recently, prosodic regularities in the distal (non-local) context have been shown to influence the perceived prosodic constituency of syllables. Three experiments tested the nature of distal prosodic patterns influencing perceptions of prosodic structure, using eight-syllable items ending in ambiguous lexical structures (e.g., tie murder bee, timer derby). For distinct combinations of distal fundamental frequency (f0) and/or timing cues, two patterns were resynthesized on the initial five syllables of experimental items; these were predicted to favor prosodic grouping of final syllables such that listeners would hear a final disyllabic or monosyllabic word, respectively. Results showed distal prosodic patterning affected perceived prosodic constituency when (1) patterns consisted of regularity in timing cues, f0 cues, or both (Experiments 1–2); (2) items ended with either a low–high (Experiment 1) or a high–low (Experiment 2) tonal pattern; and (3) tonal patterns consisted of alternating low and high-pitched syllables with progressive f0 decrease, i.e., a ‘downtrend’ (Experiment 3). The results reveal that a variety of prosodic patterns in the distal context can influence perceived prosodic constituency and thus lexical processing, and provide a perceptually-motivated explanation for the organization of acoustic speech input into prosodic

The Prosody of Discourse Structure and Content in the Production of Persian EFL Learners
The present research addressed the prosodic realization of global and local text structure and content in the spoken discourse data produced by Persian EFL learners. Two newspaper articles were analyzed using Rhetorical Structure Theory. Based on these analyses, the global structure in terms of hierarchical level, the local structure in terms of the relative importance of text segments and the ...
متن کاملAn Acoustic Study of Emotivity-Prosody Interface in Persian Speech Using the Tilt Model
This paper aims to explore some acoustic properties (i.e. duration and pitch amplitude of speech) associated with three different emotions: anger, sadness and joy against neutrality as a reference point, all being intentionally expressed by six Persian speakers. The primary purpose of this study is to find out if there is any correspondence between the given emotions and prosody patterning in P...
متن کاملIntegration of Intonation in F0 Trajectory prediction using MSD-HMMs
Present study in speech synthesis places more and more emphasis on the spectral continuities and diverse prosodic effects. The trainable HMM-based speech synthesis method tends to generate more continuous spectral structures than the traditional unit selection method. However, the F0 trajectory generated by HMM-based speech synthesis is often excessively smoothed and lacks prosodic variance. Th...
متن کاملProsodic elements to improve pronunciation in English language learners: A short report
The usefulness of teaching pronunciation in language instruction remains controversial. Though past research suggests that teachers can make little or no difference in improving their students’ pronunciation, current findings suggest that second language pronunciation can improve to be near native-like with the implementation of certain criteria such as the utilization of...
متن کاملNoise Robust Speech Recognition Using Prosodic Information
This paper proposes a noise robust speech recognition method for Japanese utterances using prosodic information. In Japanese, the fundamental frequency (F0) contour conveys phrase intonation and word accent information. Consequently, it also conveys information about prosodic phrase and word boundaries. This paper first proposes a noise robust F0 extraction method using the Hough transform, whi...
